# Getting started

Adapted from [Fallout](https://fallout.hackclub.com/docs/where-to-start)
## How do I start?

Take a deep breath – we’re here with you!

What most people realize too late in life: if you’re ever stuck, SEARCH IT UP!

If that doesn’t answer it, ask for help in [#fabricate](https://hackclub.enterprise.slack.com/archives/C0ATWSPM22J) or [#fabricate-help](https://hackclub.enterprise.slack.com/archives/C0C1C5UEZND) on Slack.
## 1. Inspiration / Starting places?
- Check out our starter guides!
- [ADAFRUIT!!](https://learn.adafruit.com/) Incredible guides / advice
- [Hackaday](https://hackaday.com/) has amazing projects, including some by [Hack Clubbers](https://hackaday.com/2025/12/28/cheetah-mx4-mini-a-pint-sized-3d-printer-controller/)!
- [Instructables](https://www.instructables.com/) has a ton of different stuff to be inspired by
- [Printables](https://www.printables.com/) houses 3D models you can take inspiration from (Don’t Copy Paste!)

## 2. What Software to use?

**3D Modeling / CAD?** Use Onshape or Fusion 360!
- [Onshape](https://www.onshape.com/) is browser-based, great for lower-end machines, and has nice sharing features. Onshape is easier to use as well! - Free for hobbyists and students
    - [Check out this amazing Onshape tutorial!](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4QzBdcQoe0&list=PLGqRUdq5ULsMDOxmu10AGPDIOkzNYu7D7&index=2)
- [Autodesk Fusion](https://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360) handles complex models better, but is heavier on your computer. Try both and see what works for you! - Free for students

**Modeling PCBs?** Use KiCad or EasyEDA!

- [KiCad](https://kicad.org/) is an open source, professional-grade PCB suite that works for introductory projects and complex multi-layer PCB designs! - Free and Open Source
- [EasyEDA](https://easyeda.com/) is a browser-based, beginner-friendly platform for PCB design, but can be limiting for more complex projects. - Free for basic use

## 3. Building it IRL:
- Ask in the [#fabricate](https://hackclub.enterprise.slack.com/archives/C0ATWSPM22J) channel on Slack!
- Check out [@alexren](https://github.com/qcoral/)’s [hwdocs.hackclub.dev](https://hwdocs.hackclub.dev/)

But – the best rule is:
Search. It. Up.
